ALP nominated for three LawWorks and Attorney General Student Pro Bono Awards

The Aberdeen Law Project is delighted to report that it has been nominated for three awards in the LawWorks and Attorney General Student Pro Bono Awards 2022.

LawWorks launched the scheme, which is supported by the Attorney General, to ‘celebrate the best pro bono activities undertaken by law students’ and the positive difference their work makes for people across the UK.

The representation team have been nominated for ‘Best contribution by a team of students’ for the work they have done to help ensure people across the North East have been able to access legal advice and representation; the schools’ outreach team have been nominated for ‘Best new pro bono activity’ for their innovative workshops to help educate young people on legal issues affecting them and their communities; and Student Director Helena Siebenrock has been nominated for ‘Best contribution by an individual student’ for her standout leadership of the Project, work on ground-breaking initiatives, and commitment to furthering access to justice and deepening the Project’s links with local communities.

Ruth Dale, Director of Representation, said: “The team rose admirably to the challenge of working remotely and were able to continue our work on all kinds of matters, from housing and consumer to employment and discrimination. I think I speak for the whole team when I say how delighted we are to have been nominated – it’s a real privilege to have the work we’ve done recognised by LawWorks and we couldn’t be happier.

Ellie Baird, Coordinator for Schools’ Initiatives, said: “It is amazing to have our schools’ programme recognised. We have continued to innovate our workshops to increase engagement with pupils across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire and that in spite of restrictions. I would like to thank our contacts at Police Scotland, who have partnered with us to deliver sessions on drug abuse prevention and mock trials, and all of our schools’ team members, without whom none of this would be possible.”

Helena Siebenrock, Student Director, said: “It has been a privilege leading ALP’s teams during my time as Student Director. If you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work and I have truly enjoyed every minute - from listening and guiding ideas to help turn them into action, engaging with other service providers, empowering teams of more than 100 members, and leading my own initiatives such as the ALP Summer Scheme and the ALP Foodbank Partnership. Each member radiates such dedication to what they do and that only inspires you to do more. I am delighted to have been shortlisted alongside two of ALP’s teams!”

Jonathan Goodyear, Advisory Board Member, said: ‘’I’m thrilled that Ruth, Ellie and Helena have been shortlisted. I’ve seen first-hand how much time, effort and creativity they have put into their work – all through a period of unprecedented challenges – and wish them all the very best at the awards night!’’

ALP is grateful for continuing financial support from the University of Aberdeen Development Trust.
