Meet our team: Lauren Pirouet

Bio

My name is Lauren, I’m from Dunfermline and I’m in the 4th year of my Scots law Degree. I’m currently the Initiative Coordinator for the Content Team.

Favourite quote?

“Though she be but little she is fierce” - Shakespeare

I think this quote resonates with me as I believe I have grown a lot throughout my time at university. I started my degree feeling shy and unconfident in myself, but now believe I have what it takes to succeed in my future career.

How would you describe your experience of the Aberdeen Law Project?

My time at ALP has been a whirlwind, with plenty of challenges to tackle head on. ALP has allowed me to develop my confidence immensely. I now feel certain of my leadership skills as I can hold myself with composure speaking in front of a crowded room – something I would have struggled with prior to joining.

Who or what inspires you?

I have always had an interest in history and, as such, an individual who inspires me is Emmeline Pankhurst. Pankhurst headed the suffragette movement for women’s voting rights in the 1920s. Though she wasn’t always perfect, she taught a male-led society to never underestimate a fearless woman.

Why do you do pro bono?

I do pro bono as I want to make a positive difference to someone else’s life. I’m lucky enough to study law - knowledge which I believe should be shared with the community to increase awareness of rights and prevent future injustice.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying law at Aberdeen?

Grab university life with both hands and take on every challenge thrown your way. Be brave enough to stand out from the crowd, be creative, ask questions and consider yourself a lawyer from day one.

Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

I have a passion for private client work and I hope to work as a solicitor in litigation. Within ten years, I hope to have travelled the world and have settled down in a city I love. Ideally, I will carry on the pro bono work which I have started at university into my future career as a lawyer.

And lastly, what’s the dream?

To work in a job I feel passionate about, surrounded by supportive people working together as a team. To build a family of my own and continue to thrive as a healthy and happy individual.

ALP is grateful for continuing financial support from the University of Aberdeen Development Trust.
