Meet our Team: Archie Mitchell Whyte

Bio

I am a final year LLB student who has been involved in the Aberdeen Law Project since second year, and I am the Treasurer of the Project. ALP has introduced me to some great friends and professional contacts, and presented me with many rewarding opportunities during my time at university.

Favourite quote?

“There is only one way to eat an elephant: one bite at a time.” – This quote reminds me that everything in life that seems daunting, overwhelming, and even impossible can be accomplished by taking on one small task at a time and sticking with it until it is completed.

How would you describe your experience of the Aberdeen Law Project?

Being part of ALP has been an unparalleled opportunity to apply the skills I have learned throughout my degree in a practical context while learning things beyond what is taught in lectures. It has been an opportunity to empower North East Scotland communities and share my skills and knowledge to contribute towards achieving an extremely important social  goal.

Who or what inspires you?

The former Scotland and British and Irish Lions rugby player Doddie Weir inspires me. From the outset of his diagnosis with Motor Neuron Disease, he has been driven to help fellow sufferers and seek ways to further research into this, as yet, incurable disease. His attitude of “enjoy the day because you don't know what happens tomorrow” and his extraordinary openness, honesty and courage is an inspiration to all.

Why do you do pro bono?

It is rewarding to know that the work I do within ALP provides a measurable benefit to the community that might otherwise not be available. Pro bono provides me with invaluable experience of real legal contact, interviewing, and research skills; and has exposed me to new perspectives on social and other cultural problems remote from my own experiences.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying law at Aberdeen?

To get involved in as many extra-curricular activities and clubs as possible, and not to be afraid to seek out opportunities for responsibility or leadership. You will never know your full potential until you try.

Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

I hope to be putting my law degree to good use in a rewarding career where I can continue to be involved in pro bono in some capacity.

And lastly, what’s the dream?

To be healthy, happy and surrounded by friends.
