Meet our team: Mieke Filler

Bio

My name is Mieke Filler, I am in my third year and currently Administration Lead and a Project Lead at the Aberdeen Law Project.

Favourite quote?

“The last few years have taught me to suspend my desire for conclusion, to assume that nothing is static and that renegotiation with be perpetual.” – Jia Tollentino, Trick Mirror. I love this quote because I think it applies to such a range of situations, from job prospects to the current pandemic, and reaffirms that change in the only constant.

How would you describe your experience of the Aberdeen Law Project?

I would describe my time at the Aberdeen Law Project as invaluable. It has been and continues to be an opportunity to meet other people and collaborate over a shared passion. I’ve had the opportunity to feel as though my work is making a difference as part of the bigger picture and see how directly applicable law is to our entire community.

Who or what inspires you?

In a time where we are lucky enough to have so many female role models, I struggle to pinpoint one. I remember growing up with the story of Malala Yousafzai in the news, and since then I have always drawn inspiration from her tenacity to challenge norms and fight for universal right to education.

Why do you do pro bono?

I do pro bono because the biggest impacts that have happened in my life have been from other people, which has showed me the power of coming together. I feel as though I am so lucky to be in a position where I can use my experience and knowledge to help others, so pro bono is without a doubt one of the best ways to do this.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying law at Aberdeen?

Be ready to work hard and the rest will come to you. Have confidence in yourself and be as involved as you feel comfortable with. Most importantly, let yourself enjoy your time at university! Joining the Law Project is a fantastic opportunity to get real experience of working as a team and a great way to develop as an individual as well, I would absolutely recommend applying.

Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

To be completely honest, I’m not even sure what I’m having for dinner tonight. But I hope that I will be in a fulfilling career that keeps me on my toes, whether that be a corporate career or a different area of law. Ultimately, I hope that I am happy with the choices I’ve made and have as few regrets as possible.

And lastly, what’s the dream?

As it is for everyone, I’m sure, the dream is to be truly happy. To have surrounded myself with wonderful people who continue to inspire me and to see myself make a positive impact.
