The Aberdeen Law Project (“ALP”) is pleased to report the successful launch of the ALP Foodbank Partnership – an initiative created to help ensure unused food doesn’t go to waste.
The scheme was launched with the support of CFINE and Aberdeen South Foodbank and connects those living in student accommodation with foodbanks to ensure that food and other items that would otherwise go to waste can be used to help local communities.
ALP launched the scheme in response to local demand and appeals for donations.
Helena Siebenrock, Student Director and founder of the ALP Foodbank Partnership, said: “As students ourselves, we know that in the rush of moving out of student accommodation, a lot of usable items can end up in the landfill. We are delighted to be able to provide a link between foodbanks and student accommodation to help stop that happening and to ensure unused food items do not go to waste. I am very excited about this new initiative, as it is unlike anything we have seen before in Aberdeen.’’
Nicky McKay, Pantry Development Worker at CFINE, said: “The ALP Foodbank Partnership is an invaluable scheme that ensures no left over, in-date tinned and non-perishable goods go to waste after students move away from their university halls. CFINE are delighted to be a part of the scheme and thank ALP for their continued support.”
Jonny Astill, Development Manager at TLC, said: “TLC is very grateful to the ALP team for initiating this fantastic and innovative scheme. We shouldn’t need food banks in our society, however, with your support, we are there to meet the need until a time where we are no longer required.’’
Demi McKay, Customer Service Adviser at Student Roost’s Mealmarket Exchange, said: “We were delighted to take part in such an invaluable scheme, and we look forward to taking part in the future. It was great to see the students come together and help the community by donating food items before they went home for the holidays.’’
The scheme is expanding to more student accommodation providers across Aberdeen to launch again in May 2022 before students move out for the summer.
ALP is grateful for continuing financial support from the University of Aberdeen Development Trust.
