Bio
My name is Hannah Renneboog, I am in fourth year and I am the Head of ALP’s Criminal Sector. Outside of law-related activities I enjoy boxing and working on the committees of the Benelux Society and the Gin Society.
Favourite quote?
“We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.” - I believe that if everyone does a little bit, great things can be achieved. In the context of ALP for example, it can be frustrating coming into contact with people in clear need of help and not always being able to do more, and it helps knowing that doing all we can to help even just one person makes a big difference.
How would you describe your experience of the Aberdeen Law Project?
Volunteering at the Aberdeen Law Project has been an eye-opening experience, I have learned so much about the law and about people in general. It is extremely rewarding to be able to see the positive impact we’re having when doing community outreach, and in particular within the Criminal Sector, to know you are preventing people from finding themselves in potentially dangerous situations.
Who or what inspires you?
Stephen Hawkings inspires me to always cultivate my mind and my thirst for knowledge, to never aim to just survive but to thrive, think bigger and better, and never let adversity win.
Why do you do pro bono?
I believe in using the knowledge I am privileged enough to have acquired to help others who are less fortunate. It is always a great feeling to know you are making a change.
What advice would you give to someone considering studying law at Aberdeen?
Don’t be afraid to try some new things, especially as a first year. Get involved in as much as you can, find something that you are truly passionate about (this could be ALP!). Make sure to take time to enjoy what you’re studying.
Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?
I am passionate about delict and tort law and would love to work in that area – whether as a practicing lawyer or as an academic, as I really enjoy research. In either case, I hope I can continue to do pro bono work and community outreach to know that I am making a difference.
And lastly, what’s the dream?
Having a job that I am excited to get up for every morning and being in a position where I am able to balance my professional life with my personal life and hobbies that fulfill me.
