Meet our team: Alex Bates

Bio

My name is Alex Bates, and I am currently in Second year studying Law with English Law. My role in ALP is the School-based Initiative Coordinator.

Favourite quote?

“As do I and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” – Gandalf

I’ve always been a massive fan of Lord of the Rings. I think this quote is particularly relevant during COVID and helps remind me to just keep going forward.

How would you describe your experience of the Aberdeen Law Project?

Since joining in First year, I’ve been able to meet so many great people in the Aberdeen Law Project. During my work with schools, it has been gratifying to see the impact we can have on the community. I’ve been able to achieve things both big and small during my time, but I’m grateful for every opportunity to give back that has so far come my way.

Who or what inspires you?

I think I derive a lot of my inspiration from my family. Their general kindness and passion for life is a big reason why I want to be involved in Pro Bono. But also, their support is a huge motivator for me, I don’t think I’d be where I am today without them.

Why do you do pro bono?

I think pro bono is often overlooked in how essential it is for some people. Being at university puts me in a brilliant position to try and use my education to assist others in their own. I think I feel especially strongly about this due to my work with schools.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying law at Aberdeen?

University is the perfect place to challenge any preconceptions about your own person. Whether it’s joining ALP or a society there are so many ways you can grow and experience new things. Yes, at times it can be scary and overwhelming. But that’s all part of the journey, and I’d say the destination is worth it.

Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

Currently my aim is to go to the Bar. Whether I achieve that only time will tell. Hopefully as a barrister I’ll be able to continue making a positive difference in people’s lives. I think I’d find a lot of satisfaction in that. I hope wherever I am I’ll still be smiling.

And lastly, what’s the dream?

Being able to finish a day feeling like I’ve put in hard work while being able to see the difference it’s made to someone. That would be grand.

ALP is grateful for continuing financial support from the University of Aberdeen Development Trust.
